2022 Geneva International Motor Show (GIMS) will not advance because of the coronavirus pandemic. After the cancellation from 2020 and 2021, the trade show should return on February 19, 2022, but it no longer happened. Organizers collect steps not as cancellation but as a delay that will see GIMS again as a “more impact” event in 2023.
“The decision to cancel GIMS 2022 is made with the best interests of car manufacturers and automotive fans in mind,” said Committee and Foundation Board “Salon International de L’Automobile,” which is responsible for organizing automatic performances. The group blamed the impact of Covid-19 has had restrictions on travel and events and car makers through the global supply of semiconductors for the decision.
We have seen many other automatic performances being canceled in 2021, but the way GIMS continues to struggle is not a good sign for this industry. Pre-pandemic, it is one of the largest car shows in the world. Usually it will attract more than 600,000 visitors, including around 10,000 journalists, to Swizerland. Outside size and scale alone, this show is very well known for all the concepts of new and wild cars that will debut on the floor.
